Sand Analysis

The difference between a common mineral resource and a high-value-added input lies in the details of its composition and morphology. An under-explored mineral resource may overlook opportunities in higher-value markets, where approval standards are based on specific requirements for each sector.

The CRC (Ceramic Materials Service Center) offers a comprehensive technical characterization platform for mining companies, helping to identify if your material meets the quality standards of various industrial segments.

Silica—the primary constituent of sand, sandstone, and quartzite—has industrial applications across several sectors. However, to understand the true potential of these mineral resources, it is essential to determine their technical characteristics, such as:

  • Chemical and Mineralogical Composition: We utilize X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine levels of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, and chromophoric oxides, alongside X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to identify mineral phases such as quartz, kaolinite, hematite, and rutile. When necessary, we can measure trace element concentrations via ICP-OES, detecting levels in the range of a few ppm.
  • Morphology and Grain Structure: Using Digital Optical Microscopy (DOM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), we evaluate the degree of grain roundness and sphericity—factors crucial for product valuation in specific industrial applications.
  • Rigorous Particle Size Control: We conduct tests according to applicable technical standards to determine the Fineness Modulus and Particle Size Distribution, ensuring ideal permeability for molds and concrete.
  • Mineral Processing Studies: Beyond characterization, we test the viability of processes such as washing, attrition, and magnetic separation to increase material purity and identify the potential for reducing clay and iron content—common contaminants in sand.

Based on laboratory analysis, it is possible to determine if your sand is suitable for markets such as glass, foundry molds, ceramic frits and glazes, mortars, and more.
